Michael: The reason Vulcan had no beer or wine license had nothing to do with The Fred being busted. The Vulcan didn’t want one. We all wanted the shows to be open to minors...a real thorn in the establishments side. Everything was in my name and I could not have had a license if I wanted one as I was not even 21. Besides it was about the most far away thing in my mind and I hated beer! Don Hyde

OK, I'll change that.

My recollection is that at the very end, the last month or two, when Bobby Hedderman and Marty McDermott were running the place, they did get a beer license, and that the beer attracted a rowdier crowd and hastened the demise.

I have an 8 track tape of Johnny Winter recorded live at the Vulcan. Another great story Michael. Too bad I missed it but I would be dead now so it's OK.

I remember those Janis flyers being piled up in the window of the Vulcan, free for the taking. I had a couple which I left stashed in my dresser at home, with copies of The Rag, many other Vulcan gig flyers, etc. when I went off to college at (now) Texas State. I came home for the Thanksgiving holiday and my mother proudly announced "I got rid of all those posters and stuff in your dresser." Dear old Mom. This was another short but vital chapter in Austin cultural history, Michael, and I just want to say that, while there were only a couple of details of which I was unaware previously, the one about the I.L. Club advertising Conqueroo as "The Kangaroos" was worth the price of the book! I just love that.

Need to read this piece of brilliant ATX music history. Shiva's Head? The Conqueroo? The next SF?
