I moved to Austin as a 20 yr old from N Tx 50 years ago today, right when KOKE FM changed into the greatest radio station there ever was and ever will be. Though Willie was our spiritual beacon, Joe Gracey was the daily leader of the Austin generation of hippies, rednecks, students and, yes, politicians, that made Austin the place where everyone wanted to be.
His guidance led me to a 50 yr career as a performing musician.
lived next door to joe and kimmie on highland street... used to hang out a smidge with them there in late 70s early 80s .... 30+ years later i "theatrically" shot their daughter Jolie Goodnight in a musical called "Strip" written by shakey graves mom , Amparo Garcia.
Oh, Gracey. Don't know why I just now stumbled upon this. Nobody like him.
Well crafted piece of writing, Michael. Nicely done
An important remembrance...
Gracey was so important to me as a teenager in Austin. A typical set might be Charlie Pride then Fromholz then Little Feat then Leon Russell …
