Evan was the best! One of the greatest players in the world. I currently have his cat Maybelline and was lucky to play with him during his last years including on his CD 'Somewhere Over The Skyline'. Thanks for help keeping his spirit alive.
Evan Johns is in the 'plays transcendent live that could never be captured on album,' Hall of Fame. "Rollin' through the night" is a good, not great album. Hole in the Wall and Continental Club and many other too small venues could not contain EJ's wild spirit and untamed guitar, but dang those were 'anything could and will happen' level of shows. In terms of 'bang per buck' of low covers and high octane performances some of the best musical values of the late 20th century.
He was one of the best I've ever seen. The first time I saw him was in '89 or '90 at the Continental Club. Earlier that night, I had taken my first ever tab of acid. Needless to say, that show had quite an impact on me. A French buddy of mine described his style by saying, "He plays guitar like a butcher with a leg of lamb."
I have a lot of video footage of Evan and the H Bombs shows in Canada. The highlight was Evan backstage commenting on the latest popular actors and then giving us an acting lesson.
great stuff a fine guitarist from this area Charlie Pastorfield(Mama Tried band here now)who lives in Virginia and lived in DC when Danny Gatton left us believes Gatton was the best ever and has said that over the years and your article substantiates how good he was with Evan John’s total admiration for him

Great article. I loved Evan…we had a blast playing together.
On his 1st album, Rollin’ Thru the Night, I played second guitar on the entire record. Do the Dootz is me. Mark Korpi is nowhere on the record.
Sorry.
I just wanted to set the record straight on that.
For the record, I truly miss Evan. I’ve never had more fun than when I was an H-Bomb.

I forgot about those songs being used in Friday Night Lights.
This was a great article Michael.
Thank you again for remembering all of these wonderful musicians.
