I began my education at The University Of Texas (Austin) in late August of 1969. I lived in Moore-Hill Hall, next to Gregory Gym -- now known as The Greg, home of National Champion Texas Volleyball.

Less than two months after I moved in, Janis Joplin brought her Kosmic Blues Band -- the one that played Woodstock -- to Gregory Gym. This was a big band, similar to the old-time Stax tours. Besides Janis, it starred guitarist-vocalist Sam Andrew (Big Brother and The Holding Company) and baritone saxophonist-vocalist Cornelius "Snooky" Flowers. Snooky was a large man -- Janis loved to ride / hump his left leg during his solos, cooing Give It To Me Big Man and Give It To Me Babeee. Fantastic show!

My dear friend Chet Helms, RIParadise, told me stories of his times with Janis. He told me how it was often reported that he and Janis hitchhiked from Austin to EssEff, but Chet said that was wrong, he drove. It's just more Beat and hippie to write that they hitchhiked. Chet was a regular driver between Texas and California then. Big Brother & The Holding Company members were Chet's tenants in the basement of his house in the Haight and he introduced Janis to them, encouraging them to make music together. I used to drink with folks now deceased such as Terry Dolan (Terry & The Pirates) and Rock Scully (Grateful Dead manager) at a bar in Larkspur, CA, called the Silver Peso ("The Peso") at the bottom of the hill from Janis' house. Janis was a regular. When Janis passed, a group of the Peso regulars, friends of Janis, went to the house, and rolled her upright piano down the hill and into the bar. Last time I was there, the piano was still there. It is not noted anywhere, but IYKYK.
