One note: Barry Shank played in Black Spring, not Black Sand. I took that as left over from the (very well-played) Giant Sand joke in the SXSW piece.

Black Spring was very good.

Michael - I like your approach. I've been working on my journey as well. In my 50+ years in the music biz I've been writing my adventures, mostly through questions people ask me about (what was Dolly like or Cher and was Eric really an Animal?) but I launch into a story in reply to an email or FB post and collect them that way. You go into detail. And it's not only informative but detailed as well. Great writing....

The Cowboy was my go to guy for finding new music and particularly the roots of the new music, such as the International Submarine Band. I felt like we had similar musical tastes, so I trusted his opinion. Seems like we were always seeing each other at shows.

When did Record Exchange (later Sound Exchange) first open its doors? Anyone?

Am loving reading these, Michael. We'll definitely buy the book. And re Inner Sanctum, I'd just moved here when it closed but was fortunate enough to become close friends with Richard Dorsett after he moved back to town in the early Aughts.

What a great photo of him here. Still miss him every day.

Keep up the great writing, Corky.

Nice job as usual Michael, I can tell you a lot more details about the Drag record store scene , Discount Records was my store, and my wife was the Columbia campus rep, so we were really plugged into the scene down there, there were other record shops too, University Co-op & Sunshine on Drag, and Daily’s outlet store on 24th. When you get this book done, we’ll give you a table to sell some at our music sale ! There’s also a rumor that Jayne Mansfield worked at a drag record store while attending UT in the ‘50s. Not sure what store it would have been ?
