As I'm working on a cover version of Charles Brown's "Black Night", I've been searching for background info on him .... and boy did I find it here. This essay is a real gem. Thanks for writing.
By the way, do you know who played guitar on the original recording of Black Night?
Great piece. I must shamefully confess that I had never heard of these two men until now.
This line jumped out at me: "Any addiction is just masking another issue: a painful upbringing, low self-esteem, depression,..." I lost a friend to alcoholism. He started drinking heavily after he killed a close friend in a car wreck and never got over the fact that he was driving the day his friend rode passenger. It took him 20 years, but he did it.
Addiction is just self-medicating to get through the day without the hurt.
What a wonderful read...thank you! I've been a fan of Charles Brown for a very long time.
